Joy
I am going to change it up a bit this week. I’ve been nattering on about the responsibilities of common sense and the effort required to apply yourself in such a manner. “Work”, “Generalizations”, “Repercussions”, goodness gracious, it seems to be quite the drudgery! We are using these core values to establish our baseline of what it means to use common sense. Another significant aspect of common sense is taking care of yourself both physically and mentally.
It is just common sense to stop a wound from bleeding, get a cast for a broken bone, take an aspirin for a headache, use reading glasses when your eyes start to age or attend to any other physical malady currently causing you discomfort, pain, or impending death. Pretty simple there! However, it is just as important to address our mental well-being. When our mental status suffers so does our physical core. Your disposition dictates the functions of your body; a living sack of water and chemicals put into motion through a vast network of electrical neurons communicating tremendous amounts of information to a central nervous system.
Your brain, in all its glory, is the central driving engine that makes it all work. The importance of keeping that brain running at peak performance is tantamount to the health of the rest of the body. That is why we must strive to find our inner joy. Every moment brings you a chance to interact within your environment. The attitude you present in any circumstance will dictate the outcome for you. Yes, that’s right, you get to look at anything the way YOU choose.
You are responsible for whether you are happy or not. No one else can do that for you. Your life is a series of reactions to the data your senses provide. No one else can feel things for you nor tell you the correct way to interpret those reactions. The world is filled with educated (and not so educated) people sharing their thoughts on how another human being should respond to any given situation. Tomes written in both fact and fiction, are genuine in their assessment, giving us the power of their conviction. We tend to mark such resources as the truth because it allows us to place the responsibility on their shoulders without making the effort to sort it out ourselves. “Dear Abby” does not have all the answers. The power lies with you.
All this brings us to finding the joy of your life; great movies or stories that move you, cooking a good meal, eating something delicious, hunting, fishing, hanging out with friends, a good bottle of wine, playing sports or games, making music, watching the sun rise or set, making love, sitting still as the evening falls, making something with your own hands, repairing a problematic situation, experiencing unconditional love, or simply reflecting upon your choice of supreme being, it is of utmost importance to pursue those moments. Nothing is quite as precious as a tear running down a grinning face. This is what we need to concentrate on as we go about our lives. Joy will fill you up and allow your body to work at an optimum level. Focusing on the negativity of your past, present or future will make you miserable and unwell. Don’t forget, as time passes in your life, you only get one moment to live. Do your best to make that moment a positive one. That’s just common sense.
Your faithful servant
